Get To Know Your Neighbor Day Pointers

  1. Decide what kind of activity you would like to do. You may want to do a block-party, pot-luck dinner or BBQ, or coffee. You might just go out and meet your neighbors by knocking on their door and saying hello. You may come up with your own ideas. Please contact us at rflyer2@yahoo.com and share what you are up to. We offer support and ideas.
  2. Please register your event here
  3. If you decide on an event, you might consider talking to a few neighbors and see who would be interested in a small planning group. Or, just do it yourself.
  4. If you do an event, go door to door and pass out flyers or party invitation cards that you can buy at many stores announcing your Neighbor Week event at least a few weeks before your event.
  5. Be prepared for some negative responses. Just keep being positive as some people might have some apprehension. Just keep moving until you find the neighbors who are ready.
  6. Keep community spirit going year round and be a source of uplift for your street. As you organize your event, you might find people that could use a hand–seniors who are alone; people in crisis or hurting; someone who is sick; youth who could use a mentor. You might be able to help connect people to support one another on an ongoing basis. You can form a “caring circle” that meets every so often and find ways to be of service to your neighbors.
  7. You might want to distribute sign-up sheets later, once you have your list of people who are interested from those that RSVP. List for tables, chairs, glasses, plates, napkins, utensils, barbecue grills, side dishes and other party essentials.
  8. Plan the food and drinks. One way is to have everyone bring their own food to grill. This is a surprisingly effective way to get strangers to mingle easily--they feel less awkward with something to do. Have everyone prepare his or her munchies.
  9. If you are ambitious you might want to dress up the block with colorful decorations. Buy lots of balloons and have everyone tie them to trees and fences on their property. Hang pinatas for the kids.
  10. Organize entertainment if you would like. Ask the neighborhood fire station to send an engine by if it's available. Plan party games for kids and adults alike, such as a water balloon toss and an egg race, etc.
  11. You might go door-to-door again to those that didn't RSVP. Do this one week before the event.
  12. HAVE FUN!!
